Backbone of the World

Posted in Best Travel  by Peter

By Malcolm Campbell

“Be wise and listen,” said the Sun. “I am the only chief. Everything is mine. I made the earth, the mountains, prairies, rivers, and forests.”
–Blackfoot Legend

George Bird Grinnell

In the high country of Montana and Alberta, the sun makes Waterton-Glacier International Peace Park new each day with the tints and shades on its palette of light. The rough mountains of the continental divide rise up from the great plains on broad brush strokes of grey, green, brown, red, and the gold of dawn’s alpine glow.

Waterton-Glacier is the only park in the world that crosses a national boundary. Waterton was established in Alberta in 1895, Glacier in Montana in 1910. The two parks combined, under separate administrations, into a 2000-square-mile wilderness in 1932.

The Pacific cordillera has been called the backbone of the world. At the 49th parallel, the rocky vertebrae began as sediment deposited in a Proterozoic sea 800 to 1600 million years ago. Ripple marks created by water and wind are suspended in time within the stone. About 100 million years ago, massive movements of the earth’s crust slammed the bedrock forty miles eastward over the younger rocks.

During the last ice age, glaciers plucked and scraped the rock along this thrust fault into horn-shaped mountains, hanging valleys, delicate arêtes, amphitheaters where turquoise lakes are framed by whitebark pine and subalpine fir. Of the park’s remaining fifty or sixty glaciers, Sperry and Grinnell are the largest.

Water, wind and ice shape and reshape the rocky spectrum of limestone, quartzite, diorite, and argillite that stretches from valley floor to mountain summit. The wonders of this rock unfold along every trail. East of the divide, thousands of hikers stop below the face of Going-to-the-Sun Mountain, Natósi-áitapo, where some say the creator of these mountains watches over his world from within the living stone.

A former college journalism teacher, Malcolm R. Campbell is a contributing writer for “Living Jackson Magazine” and the author of the novel “The Sun Singer.”

Traveling smart

Posted in Travel Guide  by Peter

Many of us love traveling, and there is no doubt that it’s smartest to travel as light as possible. Over packing can prove to be the biggest headache while traveling. Resist the temptation to overload your bags, and try and stick to just one easy to carry bag. Not only is going to spare you the problem of constantly checking your luggage, it’ll make your travel a lot easier. Make sure your bag is light enough so that you can walk around with it, without having to use trolleys or hiring a porter. Your holiday can be made so much more peaceful and fulfilling if only you manage not to pack all those unnecessary items. Check out the following tips to pack smart.

  • Pick your bag well. Pick something that is big enough to carry all your stuff, yet easy enough to carry around. Remember you might not always be able to drag it around on its wheels, so make sure it’s something that can be lifted with ease.
  • Pack clothes that are of colours more or less compatible with each other. That way, you have more combinations to wear. Stick to materials that dry quickly, and don’t wrinkle easily.
  • Pack according to the climatic conditions of where you are going. You don’t need your bathing suit in a desert; you need clothes that will protect you from the sun. Light, full sleeved clothing would be best. If you’re traveling to a cold place, a good warm jacket will do. Everybody wants to look and feel good especially while traveling, so pick a colour that will go with all your clothes, so you don’t have to pack a jacket for every kind of clothing.
  • Stick to one, or at the max two pairs of footwear. Again, pick your shoes according to the weather. Sneakers are a bad idea if you are going to a rainy place.
  • Pack little things into your shoes. It saves a lot of space in your bag.
  • Try to not pack those electronic gadgets that are not absolutely essential for your trip. They only occupy a huge amount of space in your bag. If you are the kind who just cannot do without their hairdryers, don’t forget to carry adapters.
  • Fold your clothes neatly and pack them into your bag. Make sure you fold them along the creases that you want to be there. This will reduce the chances of wrinkling, and also allow for compact packing.
  • Don’t overfill every pocket that your bag has. It’s only going to confuse you when you try to find something from the millions of little things in there. Know exactly what your pouches contain, and repack the same way each time. A better option would be to avoid bags with too many pockets.
  • Pack all your medicines together and keep them at a quickly reachable place in your bag. Same goes for important papers and documents.
  • Stick to as little toiletries, accessories and cosmetics as you can. Carry accessories that will go with more or less all your outfits. Toiletries can be bought at your travel destination as well. But make sure you check that out before hand.
  • Pack a small back pack that you can carry around with necessary things in it, especially if you are going on a holiday.
  • Make sure there’s still space in your bag, to pack all that you buy!

How to go on an affordable vacation during this economic recession by Darwin Redshield

1. Plan your vacation ahead of time. Block some vacation time on your calendar at least two months ahead of departure. Book your flight far ahead of time- this could cut your vacation costs in half. Planning ahead of time also means speaking to the necessary authorities at work, scheduling the pet’s stay at the kennel, and stopping the newspaper delivery and lawn mowing service. Make sure to tie up all your loose ends so you don’t end up paying for it due to last minute scheduling.

2. Book your flights online. Be sure to use every resource at your disposal to book the cheapest flight possible. Many sites allow you to compare flight prices and details, be sure to use these tools. Always consider flying into or out of a less-trafficked airports (i.e. Oakland instead of San Francisco). Some examples of well known sites that allow you to compare flight prices across various airlines are Orbitz and Expedia

3. Book your lodging at a vacation-ownership sponsored resort. This essentially means that you will have access to an extra-discounted hotel or resort lodging in exchange for attending a timeshare sales pitch at that resort. These pitches are harmless and usually only take up to 90 minutes of your time. The benefits of doing this mean extremely deep discounts as well as freebies like gas certificates, dinner coupons and theme park tickets. There are several sites online that are partnered with resorts across the country and provide the best deals out there like Vacation Offer

4. If you are traveling with a large family or party, you can save a lot of money by shopping at the grocery store instead of eating out. People often have the inclination to eat at restaurants when they are on vacation, however, cooking in a condo or grilling outside is far cheaper and usually more relaxing.

5. Go where the natives go. Keep your eye out for restaurants, shows and shops that are meant specifically for tourists. These places are the most expensive areas and are also where you are most likely to empty your pockets. Try to do some research ahead of time as well as speak with the locals to figure out where normal people go around the destination. If you follow this rule of thumb throughout the vacation you are likely to save quite a bit of money. Lonely Planet is a great resource to find out about a destination’s flavors, culture, and local hot spots ahead of time.

6. Take public transportation. People often forget how expensive taxi cabs can be, especially when they are on vacation. In any city center or popular destination there is almost always a mode of transportation on the cheap that the locals take advantage of. Be sure to find this out ahead of time to drastically cut down on transportation costs. Google recently added a
public transportation tool that allows you to calculate bus and train directions as if you were driving.

Islands Of India – A Bevy Of Beauties

By Sonal Arya

An island is a piece of land completely surrounded by water. Above high tide and isolated from other significant landmasses, islands of India have emergent land features. There are two main types of islands i.e., continental islands and oceanic islands. Continental islands are bodies of land that lie on the continental shelf of a continent. On the other hand, an oceanic island is one that does not sit on continental shelves. This type of island is volcanic in origin. However, a group of geographically related islands is called an archipelago. India has two major offshore island possessions i.e., the Lashadweep and the Andaman and Nicobar islands.

The Andaman Islands are a group of islands in the Bay of Bengal. Port Blair is the chief community on the islands. The climate is typical of tropical islands of similar latitude. It is always warm, but with sea-breeze it cools down the day temperature. Rainfall is irregular here, but south-west monsoon causes heavy rainfall here. The Andaman Island comprises a number of islands i.e., Barren Island, Great Andaman, Little Andaman, Ritchie’s Archipelago, and Sentinel Islands. Also, the Nicobar Islands are an island chain in the eastern Indian Ocean, are part of Union territory of Andaman and Nicobar Islands. This piece of island is a great island arch created by the collision of the Indo-Australian Plate with Eurasia.

The Lakshadweepa is located 200 to 300 km off of the coast of Kerala in the Arabian Sea. Eleven of the islands are inhabited. Lashadweep officially consists of 12 atolls, 3 reefs and 5 submerged banks, with a total of about 36 islands and islets. The name of the archipelago literally translates as hundred thousand island i.e., laksha one hundred thousand, and dweep means island.

Apart from this, islands of India contain islands of the Cauvery River that encompasses islands of Srigangapatna and Shivanasamudram. Also, you can visit islands of Mumbai harbour. The range of islands includes Butcher Island, Cross Island, Elephanta Island, Middle Ground, Oyster Rock, Salsette Island, etc.

The Islands of India are famous for tourist spots. They are perfect holiday destination for nature-lovers. Every piece of island has its own richness in a bevy of beauties.
